Awareness & Education

Knowing the signs and symptoms of meningitis is essential to saving lives and reducing the effect of the disease. Over ¼  million of our symptoms cards are distributed each year, together with our disease and after effects information. We know this saves lives.

Following an awareness talk from the Trust, Mary received a symptom card. A few months later her baby son wasn't well but Mary knew the signs & symptoms of meningitis from our symptoms card and took her son to hospital in time to save his life. You can obtain our free information materials from the Meningitis section of this site or download your Symptom card here.

Support

Our range of services is unique and gives support where and when it's needed, enabling people to move forward with their lives. Services are free, funded by voluntary donations. Many people call our 24 hour freephone nurse led helpline 1800 523 196. Over a third of calls are from people affected in some way by meningitis. Whether it's the person who had the disease, a relative, friend or employer, we are there at any time of day or night.

Working with qualified counsellors, people can work through their experience, trying to come to terms with what has happened.

The Trust’s 'one to one' service provides the opportunity to talk to someone who has had a similar experience. This helps to let people know that what they are feeling and experiencing is normal, and that there is a future after meningitis.
If you want more detail about any of the services that the Trust offers, please call 01 8459488.

meningococcal bacteriaNowadays,  pharmaceutical companies themselves are investing more heavily into research for new and improved vaccines. The Meningitis trust is focusing its research on the after-effects of these devastating diseases.

We recently carried out a Behaviour and Attitudes study whose
aim was to collect information from parents and grandparents about the following:

Awareness of meningitis as a disease.
Awareness that there are different types of meningitis.
Awareness of symptoms of this disease.
Awareness that vaccines are available to protect against meningitis.

The majority of parents and grandparents stated that meningitis was the disease they most feared. For information on this study please contact us.
